The Notebook: Nurturing the Thread of Inspiration

Discover the influence of Virginia Woolf on the artistic process of Quebec artist Marie France Cournoyer. A text on the importance of creating a gallery of one's own.

Did you know that artists’ reflections accumulate an infinite number of red threads? That every time they listen, visit an exhibition, go to the cinema, the theater, or a dance performance, they hide a notebook in which they refine or nourish their red threads? Their senses, thus engaged, collect an infinity of threads. They tie them to one another to create more deeply.

I have a notebook, and my threads intertwine on every page. From simple scribbles and incomplete phrases to imperfect poems, image clippings, or screenshots: everything is a subject to enrich my red thread.

In this blog, I will let you turn those pages. I will share these links, often intimate, that constitute the stage of inspiration.

Dictionaries define the red thread as a guiding thread. I believe the red thread is the vein of our creations; it is woven from who we are and what we experience.

I invite you to my next Red Thread. The Emily Dickinson thread. The Emily Dickinson effect.
